Size and Shape

Let me start with the form factor of this battery. It is tiny!

 Full Battery Dimensions: 5.94 x 3.9 x 3.7 inches

The battery itself weighs just under four pounds, making it lightweight and compact enough to be added to an enclosure for mobile use.

Charge and Discharge

This battery features a fairly standard charging profile for LiFePo4. The standard charge rate is 10A, coming out to be .625C (we'll typically see a .5C charge rate). This means we can charge the battery to full in just under 2 hours.

This BMS does however allow for higher rate charging. The battery is rated for a maximum charge current of 40A! Honestly, that's a bit insane. That would mean a full charge of the battery in about 20 minutes. Even if the battery is capable of handling that much current, it would almost certainly have a dramatic impact on the batteries lifecycle.

Discharge is one of the reasons I really like this battery. Our standard discharge rate is 42A. That means we can pull over 500w out of this battery if we need to do so. Now that said, it's important to note that these batteries use an F2, or TAB 250 terminal. That means you're probably not putting anything larger than 10 gauge wire, and most 10 gauge is only rated for 30amps, so unless you want to heatshrink your insulation without a heat gun, you'll likely want to avoid pulling the full discharge rate for this battery other than for a very short moment.

But! all that said, it's really great to be able to pull 500w on a surge from such a small battery.

Capacity

This battery was a little temperamental in our capacity tests. It really seems like these cells are not well balanced before they ship out. What that means for a user is, you really want to get a good top balance.

After a 4 or 5 cycles, and a decent rest period at a trickle charge, I was able to pull full capacity from this battery.

Battery Protection Features

Now this battery is not perfect. At this price point, you have to expect that some corners are going to be cut.

This battery lacks a low temperature disconnect. This means that if you're are planning to use this battery for outdoor application, like in an e-bike for example, you have to be much more cautious with when you charge. Charging below freezing will absolutely damage your battery, and reduce your cycle life.

The over-voltage disconnect and low-voltage disconnects are also set a bit to wide for my taste. This over-voltage disconnect does not trigger until 15.6 volts, well beyond the maximum charge voltage of around 14.6. I would have liked to see something closer to 15, or 15.2.

The low voltage disconnect does not trigger until 10.0 volts. I really would have liked to see this around at least 11, if not higher, to provide the maximum protection for the battery cells.

Conclusion

Overall, I'm quite please with this battery. At $59.99 its the most competitively priced small-scale LiFePo4 battery that you can purchased without having to wait for the slow boat from China. While it does miss on some important protection features, these things can all be resolved with conservative use and a controlled charging environment.

This battery really packs a punch, and I highly recommend it.
